anniversary update

The next major update to Windows 10 (code named Redstone) dubbed the Anniversary Update by Microsoft has been unveiled and it’s expected to be available to consumers sometime this summer (July 2016).

Here are a few facts from Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President, Windows and Devices Group about how Windows 10 has fared since launch;

In the eight months since launch, Windows 10 is off to the fastest start in Windows history, with over 270 million active devices, outpacing Windows 7 in the same timeframe by 145%. People are spending more time on Windows than ever before – over 75 billion hours – with the highest customer satisfaction of any version of Windows. We are on track to reach our ambitious goal of one billion Windows 10 devices in the next few years.
We welcome everyone to Windows 10, whether you have a new PC, a five-year-old PC, or a brand new Mac – we are building the most secure, productive, and fun platform for you.

The Windows 10 anniversary update is going to be free and available to all windows 10 users.

Some of the features coming in the anniversary update include:

1. Windows Hello Brings Biometric Security to Apps and Microsoft Edge

Windows Ink is an all new experience, putting the power of Windows in the tip of your pen, enabling you to write on your device as you do on paper, creating sticky notes, drawing on a whiteboard, and easily sharing your analog thoughts in the digital world. Windows Ink is integrated into apps like Maps, Microsoft Edge and Office.

3. Cortana, Now More Helpful than Ever, with over 1,000 apps

4. UWP apps come to Xbox through a Unified Windows Store and every Xbox One can become a dev kit
With the Anniversary Update, any Xbox One can be a developer kit with Xbox Dev Mode, enabling anyone to develop for the living room

Also if you are already a Windows Insider then you might probably be using some of these features. If not you can try the new innovations coming in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update by joining the Windows Insider program and install the latest build.

WhatsApp Web Works with Microsoft Edge Browser

WhatsApp Web Works with Microsoft Edge Browser

WhatsApp Web is finally available to Microsoft Edge browser users.
whatsapp web

Microsoft Edge is the official browser that comes pre-installed in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile operating system. It’s also the browser that officially replaced Internet Explorer (still available in windows 10).

WhatsApp Web was introduced sometime in January 2015 as a web client that mirrors a persons chat account from your phone to your personal computer. This was introduced to provide a richer communication experience to users of WhatsApp. WhatsApp Web isn’t a different chat account or platform. It’s the same WhatsApp account setup on your phone that gets synchronized and mirrored to the PC, so you have the same information.

But up until now it wasn’t usable on Microsoft Edge browsers and still doesn’t support any Internet Explorer version.

WhatsApp Web

How do you go about this?

Minimum requirements to enjoy WhatsApp Web

  • You need to have an active WhatsApp account on your phone.
  • You need to have a stable internet connection on both your phone and your computer.
  • You need to use the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari as your web browser on your computer.

Once you meet the browser specifications;

To get started with WhatsApp Web

  1. Visit web.whatsapp.com on your computer.
  2. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
    • On Windows Phone: under Chats go to Menu > WhatsApp Web.
    • On Android: in the Chats screen > Menu > WhatsApp Web.
    • On iPhone: go to Settings > WhatsApp Web.
    • On BlackBerry: go to Chats > Menu > WhatsApp Web. (On BlackBerry 10: Swipe down from top of the screen )
  3. Scan the QR Code on your computer screen from your phone with your camera.

From your phone, navigate to WhatsApp Web to view your logged in computers or to logout from an active  chat session.

Is this an added bonus to you?, because honestly I’ve been looking forward to this as I’ve decided to try out only Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer on a PC as only browsers. There have been some limitations as expected but with more extensions expected to be available in the next major Update  aka “RedStone”, I guess I wouldn’t have much to worry about.

With WhatsApp being used by people in doing several things like sharing vital information during natural disasters or health emergencies, finding a date, growing a small business, buying an engagement ring, or seeking a better life etc.  it comes in handy.

IICD founding partners of TizaaWorks ceased it operations on 31st December 2015 after 20 years of operation.

“December 2015 marks an end of an era for IICD. In what is perhaps its final act of graceful self-effacement,”  – Kentaro Toyama, IICD International Advisory Board Member

Our gratitude goes out to our staff, global network of ICT4D professionals, and local and international partners who throughout the years trusted and supported our work to enable people in developing contexts to become drivers of positive social change.

“At IICD, we are confident that under the new leadership of the World Vision team, TizaaWorks will continue to make a difference for youth on their pathway to fulfilling their employment and entrepreneurship endeavors.
We wish the best of luck to the new implementing partner, and to the youth in Ghana – many meaningful opportunities for professional development.

We would strongly like to add a thank you to Microsoft for the collaboration and gratitude to all local partners who supported TizaaWorks in 2015” – Ewelina Szopinska

Microsoft Country Manager Ghana, Derek Appiah on the new partnership said,

“Having operated in Ghana for 10 years, one of our main objectives has been to invest in the country’s education and youth.
With the help of partners like IICD, we have been successful in launching TizaaWorks to improve youth employability and we look forward to reaching even more youth through our new partner World Vision, who have been driving similar projects on the continent.
Our ambition as we move forward is to reach even more young Ghanaians by engaging with local partners to connect them with online and physical opportunities in training, employment and entrepreneurship.”

World Vision Ghana’s Andrew Ofosu-Dankyi, speaking on becoming the new implementing partners;

World Vision Ghana collaborates with Microsoft to equip 20,000 disadvantaged youth from rural communities countrywide, with employable skills to prepare them for the job market.

“With our development interventions already benefitting over four million children and their families, our hope is that this partnership will deepen our objective to ensure rural youth acquire relevant employability and entrepreneurial skills.
In addition, the project will expose these youths to flexible ICT education, which will help them to match competitively with their counterparts in the cities.”

TizaaWorks offers access to free courses to develop the youth’s professional skills, aggregates the best, ensuring access to rich content and exposing them to the various learning and training organisations that can help them realize their career aspirations.
