Microsoft Build 2021 is all about developers! Throughout the event, over one hundred new services and updates across various areas of the Microsoft technology stack are going to be announced. But there seems to be one area on the Microsoft CEO’s mind, Windows. During the keynote address, he makes a passionate appeal and call to developers. Satya mentions a significant update is coming to Windows to make it the most innovative new open platform to build and distribute applications.
In the closing stages of his keynote, Satya Nadella talks briefly about Windows and notes “Windows is implicit, it’s never been more important.” He goes on to talk about how developers need to embrace windows as a dev box. By saying, Windows brings together all the developer collaboration tools in one place irrespective of platform or hardware.
Satya however did not get into the specifics of how the company is going to do this or what the update is about. He said more will be coming soon. But you can get a hint of what is to come from what he shared. Read it below.
Windows as a dev box, the innovative new open platform
No one will want technology that rapidly scales but breaks the world around us. Our ambition is to be the platform for platform creators. We want to help you help the world, that is at the core of our mission.
Across all the opportunities I’ve highlighted today Windows is implicit, it’s never been more important. Windows 10 is used by more than 1.3 billion people to work, learn, connect and play and it all starts with Windows as a dev box. Windows brings together all your developer and collaboration tools in one place. It lets you choose the hardware you want, works with Linux and Windows as one, and has a modern terminal. Soon we will share one of the most significant updates to windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunities for developers and creators. I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months. Our promise to you is this; we will create more opportunities for every Windows developer today and welcome every creator who is looking for the most innovative new open platform to build, distribute and monetize applications. We look forward to sharing more soon.
Next generation Windows update including developer and creator monetization, Here is what to expect.

Microsoft will celebrate Black History Month with collections of games, movies, tv shows and community events across Xbox and Windows. The company will be offering gaming experiences that highlight the contributions of Black and African American developers and creators.
Through the curation of collections of games, movies and tv shows by Black communities at Microsoft in the Windows and Xbox digital stores. Titles include, ‘Afterparty, Watch Dogs 2, Apex Legends, The Sims 4, Black Panther, Insecure, Hidden Figures and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.
Microsoft will also raise awareness of causes that matter to Black communities and allow Xbox gamers to earn and donate Microsoft Rewards to organizations supporting Black communities.
These initiatives aren’t just a celebration of inclusion in gaming says Garron Ballard, Global Games Category Manager for Xbox and Windows Digital Stores. They’re also a chance to challenge assumptions around what a gamer or game developer looks like, he adds.
“I grew up playing video games, I’ve always been really interested in science fiction and fantasy. Growing up in an African American family and going to school in spaces where I was really in the minority … I always felt very abnormal,” “There are a lot of people who have preconceived notions of what a Black person is or what a Black person should like.”
Garron Ballard
Minecraft Education Edition is also offering four lessons as a free demo from now till 28th February to anyone to mark the celebrations. The four lessons cover social justice, identity, and civil rights. They are ‘Good Trouble: Black lives matter, Good Trouble US Civil Rights, The “I”in Identity and Who is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’.
Microsoft notes these initiatives are not limited to Black History Month. It says it is part of the inclusion work happening at Microsoft to make gaming for everyone.

Update: Includes links to manual update, Answers if it is safe to download
Windows 10 version 20H2 October 2020 Update download is available and rolling out in a measured and phased approach.
The Windows update is the second feature update of the year after Microsoft released the first in May. It comes with a number of new features and improvements to the operating system.
There are changes to how Microsoft is delivering the Windows 10 version 20H2 October 2020 feature update this time around. You’ll recall from previous updates that it takes a long time to download and install. This isn’t and wouldn’t be the case any longer.
To be honest, this is the fastest windows feature update i have seen. This is because Microsoft is using the servicing technology it uses for its monthly update process. If you are sceptical about upgrading i don’t think you should. I will tell you why a in a few paragraphs. My experience was seamless and great without any glitches.
Everyone who has updated to the May 2020 update or Windows 10 version 2004 should get a faster experience. However, if you are still on an earlier Windows 10 version you will still use the old method of updating.
The 20H2 feature update offers a scoped set of features to improve performance and enhance quality, shares John Cable, Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery.
The feature update includes the new Microsoft Edge based on Chromium, Xbox Game Pass for PC, Settings and Notifications improvements. Others are Theme-aware Start tiles, Microsoft Edge tabs in Alt + Tab, Personalised taskbar and tablet posture improvements. The new Microsoft Edge now enables you to create different user profiles so that you can easily synchronize and switch profiles across devices.
What is new in Windows 10 version 20H2
No Fails or glitches
Microsoft is taking a measured seeker-based rollout approach and is throttling availability over the coming weeks. So you don’t have to do anything really, till it shows up in your Windows update settings.
To get the update open Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. Do you see the update like in the picture below? Select Download and install to get it.
Manual Download.
However, if you don’t see the notification in your Windows update settings this is what you can do to get the update now.
What are your thoughts on the new Windows 10 feature updates? The new way of delivering the update to users? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
Updated 29 October 4:17 PM: Article updated to include manual download links and answer questions on if it is safe to download Windows 10 version 20h2.
Popular consumer operating system (OS) Windows, marks new user milestone, reaching one billion devices. Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Modern Life, Search and Devices, Yusuf Mehdi shared this in a blog post. Thanking customers, partners and employees for more than one billion active Windows 10 devices.
Today we’re delighted to announce that over one billion people have chosen Windows 10 across 200 countries resulting in more than one billion active Windows 10 devices. We couldn’t be more grateful to our customers, partners and employees for helping us get here.
This announcement means one out of every seven persons on the planet uses a Windows 10 device.
The Journey
In July 2015, Microsoft launched Windows 10 as a free upgrade to its older operating systems. Releasing the OS in seven versions: Windows 10 home, mobile, pro, enterprise, education, mobile enterprise and internet of things (IoT). The company envisioned the OS running on 1 billion devices before or by 2018.
Twenty-four hours after the general release of Windows 10, Microsoft reported it was running on 14 million devices. The number increased to 75 million upgrades by the end of July 2015. Finally, it has taken the company two more years to reach the target. There is the belief that Microsoft mobile which was scrapped along the way could have helped the company in meeting this target.
Here is a timeline of how the OS was adopted over time. With moments where it looked as if Microsoft was forcing the upgrade on users.
