This is how the Google for Africa 2022 event invite reads.
“Join us for the second virtual Google for Africa event as we share how we are delivering on [our] commitment and how we are building the future together. Join us to learn how Google is invested in Africa’s digital transformation“.
As is the norm at Google Africa events it will have two parts, a keynote and masterclass sessions. Then 13 masterclass sessions on the 6th and 7th of October, targeted at YouTube creators, business founders, NGOs, IT pros, and developers.
This year the company introduces a career path to Google session for tech and non-tech talent looking to work at Google. Masterclasses will cover areas like SMB growth, digital advertising, nonprofit management, YouTube Shorts, AI, and Google cloud.
Last year Google announced plans to invest $1 billion over five years to support initiatives including startups and connectivity. It launched an African Investment Fund to invest $50 million in startups and provide $10 million in low-interest loans to small businesses and entrepreneurs in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa through the non-profit Kiva. Google also announced plans to scale a program started in Kenya in partnership with Safaricom that allows customers to pay for 4G-enabled phones in installments across the continent with partners such as Airtel, M-KOPA, MTN, Orange, Transsion Holdings, and Vodacom. It also launched Plus Codes for streets without addresses and YouTube Shorts for creators.

Are you new to the trading world and ready to make the transition from a demo account to a real live account? Like many beginners, the question is how much money will I need to start the journey. This post will go straight to the point and give you an idea of what to know.
Before you start trading it is important to focus on learning, learning more and practising the skill. Next, put in hours and hours of practice with a demo account till you feel you have a strategy and are profitable. Being profitable is having a streak of more wins than losses consistently for a long duration. So let’s say you have done this and are ready to move on to the next stage. That’s moving on from using a demo account to a real and live trading account. It will be advisable to use an amount that doesn’t mean much to you, one you are willing to lose. This amount will vary per person but if you can lose one hundred dollars ($100) or equivalent start with that. For someone else, this amount could be less or more.
Trading a 0.01 lot size to grow your account
Start with one hundred dollars and use the 0.01 lot size. Doing this prevents you from blowing your live trading account with one trade. Practise taking out trades and sticking to your plan. Yes, you need a plan and you’ll need to stick to it. Trading is said to be a get-rich slow method, doing otherwise can lead to not sticking to plan and over trading, which will lead to losing everything.
You really need to have a plan and a strategy to prevent you from jumping into every trade. When you have a plan, you wait for your setup and stick to your risk management. This will help you build consistency, and master your psychology and emotions.
When you are doing this and everything is going well, meaning you have grown the account from about one hundred to two hundred, you can now add more or just keep growing it. Just don’t go crazy and throw your whole life savings in there.
Losses are part of trading so don’t be afraid of failing, let failure teach you a lesson and don’t give up. Go back to the drawing board, backtest and learn more. All the best in your trading journey.

Tecno has partnered with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to launch the special edition CAMON 19 Pro Mondrian. The device comes with a “sunlight drawing” or light sensing technology that allows the phone to change colours. It is inspired by the beauty of lines and colour of Piet Mondrian, the Dutch pioneer of abstract art known for his bold and colourful block paintings. The special edition Camon also comes as a Gift Set featuring a TECNO CAMON 19 Pro Mondrian Edition smartphone, a pair of TECNO TWS SONIC 1 earbuds, and other 2 Mondrian style accessories. In June this year, TECNO released the TECNO Camon 19, Camon 19 Neo, Camon 19 Pro and Camon 19 Pro 5G.
TECNO’s “sunlight drawing” technology – more formally known as polychromatic photoisomer technology – is a process that breaks through the technical limitations of single-colour or dual-colour discolouration, and is inspired by the works of Mondrian, enabling the phone’s shell to follow geometrical patterns of colour change in the sun.
The special edition device comes with what looks like a white back, but the second light hits the back cover it changes colour. It has the same features as the Camon 19 Pro. Sporting ultraslim 0.98mm thin bezel that gives you more screen space. As well as the dual-ring triple-camera layout design and RGBW camera sensor + Glass technology and 50MP 2X Optical-Zoom Lens. Which promises brilliant portrait photography in challenging low-light and nighttime conditions.
The Mondrian edition is currently available in Kenya at Ksh 35,000 and NGN 187,500 in Nigeria. Tecno says it will be available across global regions including Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Southern Asia.

Apple says it is removing the SIM tray for the US iPhone devices. They will use only an eSIM as it is a more secure alternative to a physical SIM card. eSIM also allows a phone user to have multiple cellular plans on a single device. Seeing that the technology isn’t yet in use in African countries including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Congo, Senegal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe it will be interesting to see if it forces telecommunication companies to leapfrog.
Apple is known to hasten and bring disruptions, like when it stopped shipping charging cables and reduced the size of the device packaging box. So it will also be interesting to see how other markets such as the UK, China, India, UAE, Argentina, Brazil, Qatar, etc. embrace and plan for the eSIM decision. Will other device manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei follow suit and how long before SIM trays are done away with?

Microsoft names Kunle Awosika as the new Managing Director of the Africa Transformation Office (ATO) in a new reorganization to optimize its operations in Africa to scale impact. I am delighted to have the opportunity to meaningfully impact this growth and help unlock the continent’s full digital potential,” said Kunle.
Kunle has over 22 years of experience working in multiple countries across the continent. He also has a deep understanding and passion for Africa’s growth. He has held several positions at Microsoft, including director of Enterprise Business, Country Manager Microsoft Kenya, as well as director of Small and Medium Corporates, Emerging Markets. “I look forward to playing a role in unlocking Africa’s potential as the ATO develops and steers strategic partnerships with governments, international organizations, and partners to accelerate digital transformation agendas and fuel a knowledge-based economy,” Kunle added.
Microsoft Africa Transformation Office
Launched in 2021, the ATO supersedes the continent-wide multi-million dollar Microsoft 4Afrika investment project launched in 2012. In simple terms, the Microsoft ATO is Microsoft’s move to scale out what it did with 4Afrika across the continent. It focuses on enabling growth and fuelling investment in four essential development areas. – Digital infrastructure, skilling, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and start-ups. –
Now, we have a responsibility to play a different role that drives impact at scale, says Wanja Gitonga, Microsoft ATO Communications lead. Reaching millions of Africans and accelerating Africa’s digital transformation to help deliver long-lasting African economic prosperity through digital technologies. The ATO will play an enabling role to accelerate and scale up existing programs within Microsoft, she adds.
Wanja notes that Microsoft is committed to rethinking how and why it develops digital solutions and strategies to better serve the needs of Africa. Through large-scale digital partnerships and initiatives across infrastructure, skilling, SMEs, and startups, we hope to impact the lives of millions of Africans and foster economic prosperity through digital technologies.
Microsoft understands that it cannot achieve these ambitious goals alone. Saying, strategic partnerships with governments, international organizations, multinationals, and African enterprises will accelerate investments in Africa and increase the continent’s export of digital services.
Since its inception, Microsoft Africa Transformation Office has spearheaded a number of initiatives and strategic partnerships across Africa. It announced the launch of Microsoft Startups Founders Hub in Africa and new partnerships with accelerators and incubators to provide startups with access to markets, technical skills, and funding to accelerate the growth of 10,000 African startups over the next five years.
